the first look – a modern wedding tradition
A ‘first look’ is a modern wedding tradition which more and more couples are deciding to do before their wedding. They’re super special and a lovely, intimate moment before the ceremony begins.
Technically speaking, a first look breaks the tradition of waiting until you come down the aisle to see each other. However, a first look is much more of a modern tradition.
Traditions develop (and modernise) for a reason, so here are my thoughts on the benefits of adding a first look into your wedding schedule.
Anticipation
There is really no feeling like it – seeing the love of your life for the first time on your wedding day, after months of build up and preparation. Equally, it’s an overwhelming time, nerves are high and you want to keep it together in front of your wedding guests. By having a first look, just the two of you, it allows for a private, tender moment between the two of you. Seeing each other for the first time alone; gives an opportunity to soak it all in, settle nerves and have a quiet moment before the chaos of the day, reminding you of the commitment you’re about to make to each other.

All the Emotions
Some people might think that a first look spoils the emotion at the altar, whereas in my mind, it’s double the reaction, double the emotion! It’s just the two of you (and your photographer), there’s less pressure not to cry or look nervous and you can truly express yourself authentically, away from a larger crowd.
One lovely thing to consider is to keep your veil (or another accessory) off for the first look, then when you meet at the altar it’s a little surprise! Coming down the aisle is a new experience and there’s new emotion, a first look can just ease those pre-wedding jitters!
Scheduling a first look also gives an opportunity to take some pre-ceremony portraits when you’re looking your best, in turn freeing up time in the reception to mingle with your guests. We’ll make the most of the natural daylight (especially important for Winter weddings) for those softer and more romantic shots, but as the day goes on you’ll relax, as will your body language so we can have some fun with golden hour portraits or after an outfit change!

Alternative First Looks
While a first look between a couple is beautiful, there are other first looks which are equally as sentimental and emotive; either between parents and their daughter, siblings, or bride and bridesmaids, as it will be the first time they’ll have ever seen you as a bride!
There’s a special place in my heart for a mother and father -daughter first look. It’s a symbolic tradition of course, that father and daughter share a moment before walking up an aisle, but this is a more inclusive and modern tradition. A first look allows an opportunity to dry any tears and reset emotions before making one of the most memorable walks of your life!

Connections
I read recently that a first look offers a time to ‘connect, reflect and celebrate’ and I think that perfectly sums it up!
My work is an expression of what I am most passionate about: storytelling, simplicity & human interaction. If this approach resonates with you and you would like to learn more about how I work click here.
