Family Moments
when four
become five
of family life…
I am forever grateful to families who invite me to document this magical time. Captured on medium format film for the most luminous glow

when four becomes five
It is always an honour when a fellow photographer asks you to photograph their family but this was an even more special treat. I was able to meet the newest addition to the family, as four became five. At only a few weeks old and ever so tiny, this baby boy fitted into his Dad’s hand and this felt like a moment to treasure for both the family and myself.
The family requested I use analogue film to capture the shoot. It is a beautiful choice for portraits as it shows the natural radiance of skin, and who can better the glow of a new born baby? I used medium format film which offers a slightly different crop or image size, a little more square than a traditional 2:3 image ratio, and I especially like it for the feeling of intimacy.
We had chatted about the various different shots we would aim for; individual images of the baby with each parent, as well as the parents and baby together. With a family adjusting to a new character, and the older children at school for part of the shoot, we thought we might need to play it a little by ear as to how the larger family group shots would work. I was delighted to be able to capture both older kids with their little brother; it is such a special time to see these bonds form. And we also managed the entire group, which might have been their first photograph all together! I love the idea that these images will stay with this family forever, it’s a true joy and a privilege to have captured it.
