A Garden Wedding
Photographed on film

Faye & Joseph held their garden wedding at the historic Nymas, a National Trust site, with an extensive garden set around a romantic house and ruins in West Sussex. I was so excited to return to Nymans, where I had photographed a beautiful wedding a number of years before; it is a true garden lovers paradise, with a long borders, sunken lawn, rose pergolas and woodland. It was an extra treat to begin the day at nearby Leonardslee House (home to an equally historic garden) for Faye’s bridal prep. This 19th-century Italianate style house has undergone recent refurbishment and the bridal suite was ideal for leisurely portraits for Faye and her bridesmaids.

It was important to both the bride and groom that their garden wedding was captured on film, for the rich colours (they requested no black & white images) and heirloom quality. I adore how the pastel colours of the bridal suite and the bouquets of English summer blooms, made by Faye herself, still retain a vibrancy because of this. Faye’s elegant Self Portrait lace gown, was modern and sophisticated with its high neckline, capped sleeves and simple silhouette. It was the perfect match to Joseph’s contemporary black-tie lounge suit.

The many hidden paths of Nymans allowed for group shots of both the groomsmen and bridal party before the ceremony, under the enchanting Italian style loggia. On one of the hottest days of the Summer, the cool shade of this space was so welcome and working with analogue film, I was able to capture the contrast between the shade and the bright Summer’s day retaining detail and atmosphere for this garden wedding.

Having seen my previous work at Nymans, Faye & Joseph were keen to explore the gardens for their portraits. We were spoilt for choice. Gothic ruins, a dovecote, dappled light amongst trees, all idyllic garden wedding settings, especially when captured on film.

The reception and speeches were held in the newly renovated Riding House, with its gentle contemporary styling, embellished with colourful dahlias and crisp white linen. Guests spilled out into the sun drenched courtyard before a first dance and fabulous conga just as the sun finally set.

All images here are medium format film, with the exception of the dancing with is photographed with digital cameras. To see more of my film photography, please click here.
